Irish Cavy Club - (I.C.C)

Welcome to the Irish Cavy Club founded 17/7/13.

dedicated solely to cavies with the main aim of the club is to help raise cavy welfare standards, educate owners of the best form of care & to start registered lines of cavies for showing or breeding. The club has the interests of the animals at heart FIRST. On our website you will find information on the club, rescues for cavies, recognized & registered breeders, caresheets, links & much much more. Serving the republic of ireland but open to members from N.I and other countries also. Benefits of membership include but not limited to subscription to our newsletter, discounts for classes at shows held by the ICC, club keyring, breed standards poster and much more.

Irelands FIRST & only cavy club & registration system

We aim to hold annual cavy shows and perhaps in time more frequently. We hope to increase breed standards in ireland to conform more to the likes of the BCC in the uk and you can see breed standards here on our site. we are however an IRISH club and so will not be affiliated to, governed by or following any other countries club rules or standards.

The ICC is a friendly club always more then happy to offer help and advice on breeding, showing & caring for cavies and im sure our members and registered breeders will too.

We are not taking on members or organizing shows yet as we have started this club with little more then a name. We shall keep updates here and once we gain enough interest membership will be open to the public and we will work from there.

Become a Registered Breeder

to become a registered breeder you must firstly be a member of the ICC. You must then register with us a suitable caviary stud name prefix which will be used at the start of ALL you cavies registered names for example “drummers cavies salamander” this ensures buyers, attenders of shows held & others will get to know your studs name & help you build a reputation in the show ring & as a breeder.

Membership fee – yearly ? euro

Preparing for a show -

preparing for a cavy show is relatively easy and the club are happy to offer advice via call or email anytime where a member is unsure how best to proceed.

You will need a small square display pillow or mat for the judging table to place your cavies on while being inspected by judge. These can be bought at holy cavy customs small business by emily white OR you can make your own/buy one suitable. Dont worry even a folded towel will be good to get you started. Some breeders will custom their own display squares and the color of your mat/pillow should help enhance your guinea pig being displayed for example a red mat would be ideal for a white or a black self cavy.

You will be required to bring your own carrier large enough for you cavy/s and should have a water bottle & feed bowl attached this is for travel and for a holding pen until your class is being judged. However show pens can be pre-booked with show secretary.

You will be asked to provide hay & water for the duration of the show for each cavy your showing and also any bedding or mats for either your carrier or for a booked show pen. Shavings available where requested. But we would recommend high absorbency carefresh bedding or a piece of vet bed.

Ideally you should have your membership card with you or have your ICC membership number memorized or written down for show day. As this is sometimes requested when filling out prize cards details.

You cavy should be bathed preferably with a lice shampoo we recommend GG range in the uk to prevent spread of lice at a show & well groomed. You should have the nails trimmed and weight checked.

You should spend time daily handling your cavy, getting it used to being inspected, picked up & groomed. training your cavy to stay on its display mat is sometime you should also do and with time and experience your cavy will mellow and become used to all areas of a show day.

How Icc shows work -

you choose a class/s best suited to your cavy taking into consideration its breed, age and gender. (list of classes will be found on the secretary's table) each cavy will get a pen number on the day & this number should also be displayed for the judging table too. There are breed classes for members ONLY and pedigree cavies. 1St, 2nd & 3rd will be awarded in each class. After judging of all classes have finished a championship class will be held and ALL first prize pigs from above classes can be entered (NO CHARGE) both champion and reserve champion will be awarded. Junior cavy classes are for cavies aged 12 weeks – 6 months. Rescue's

Here we provide information on rescues around ireland who either specialize in or willing to take in cavies. We think very highly of rescue and would recommend it to anyone looking for a pig before thinking of buying from a breeder. There are pro's and con's to a rescue cavy but they can be so very rewarding to own too.

below is a list of rescues including name, phone, email, area and website/facebook page for photos of adoptable cavies.

Any donations, help offered or piggies adopted is greatly appreciated and we view rescue cavies highly at both our shows & in general so why not email us stories of rescue cavies, pictures and more ! We would love to hear from you. 25% of all money made on show days goes directly to sarah's rodent rescue specializing in cavies. We support all rescues and are delighted to work with a rescue regarding advertising, donations, help or any advice they can offer to increase welfare standards.

Breed classes are open to those looking to exhibit show or breeding line cavies and we would prefer if all rescues are kept to the classes we would recommend for them to give rescues and pedigree cavies the best chances at a prize in classes entered. We actually have MORE classes for pet and rescue cavies then breed ONLY classes to show our major support of rescues and pets.

Good homes is where good welfare is started
so if your looking for a pet only then adopt

WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR MORE RESCUES IN IRELAND TO HELP THESE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS

so if you are setting up, already own or interested in being a rescue let us know

All cavies offered for sale must come with change over feed sample & a free caresheet. Breeders should also offer buyers good advice before & after sale.

Breeders can be removed from our directory for complaints about mis-sexing an animal, mis-representing an animal for sale, poor condition of animal for sale or used for breeding stock, poor housing conditions, mass breeding or. The breeder will be contacted if a complaint is made. The ICC will then decide if the complaint merits further investigation. Should we deem the complaint as frivolous or if all attempts by the breeder to contact or make right any wrongs have been ignored. More then 3 complaints and a breeder will be removed.

Complaints against a breeder must be lodged in writing to the ICC via email along with proof of your complaint I.e vet bills for injuries, professional opinions in writing from vet or rescue regarding condition of animal or condition of breeders set up & a copy of complaint sent to the SPCA or other local rescue reporting the breeder. Breeders should be in a position to take back in unwanted pets they have bred & sold. This is to help with rehoming issues & lessen stress on rescues as well as preventing the animal from ending up in an unsuitable home.

Breeders must have been breeding for at least 1 year prior to registering with us. Anyone wishing to become a new breeder can notify us of a date they have started to breed & in 12 months time should no issues come to light they will be permitted to become a breeder with us.
